Hotel
Security
When
traveling, it is almost imminent at some point that you will be staying
in a hotel or motel. First off, the most important thing to consider
when choosing a place to stay is the location. You want to be sure you
are staying in a descent safe area. The
best way to do this, is to choose a hotel not soley based on the
cheapest one you can find, but rather a name of a chain that you are
familiar with and trust. Keep all doors locked
The
next thing to consider is what floor you want to stay on. The first
floor is always more vulnerable to a break in than an upper floor, but
2nd and 3rd can be vulnerable as well, especially those with balconies
due to the fact many people feel completely safe being on an upper
floor and therefore often leave the slider open when they leave the
room or even when they sleep at night. This
is not a good idea. Always keep the door locked when you are asleep or
away from the room, even if it is only for a moment. Because it only
takes a moment for a professional burglar to get in, get what they want
and get out. Never answer the door to a strangerOne
common trick that is used by professional criminals is knocking on the
door claiming to be a hotel maintenance man or security. These are
usually criminals who have watched you and know what it is they want
from you: money, expensive wedding ring, a watch or any other expensive
personal belongings that they may have noticed on you or your family
member. Never
answer the door to someone whom you are not expecting. If the person
claims to be from the hotel and you are not expecting anyone from the
hotel, call the front desk and ask if this person should be there. If
front desk can't explain who it is then this person does not belong
there. In this case request hotel security to come to your room and
confront the person at the door. Avoid the parking lot If
possible try to avoid using parking lots if valet is an option. You
usually only have to tip the valet a couple of bucks (with exception of
the expensive fancy hotels) and it lessons your chance of a run-in with
someone trying to rob you as you have your back turned while getting
your luggage out of the car. The bad guys know how vulnerable we all
can be while on vacation and use this to their advantage. Do not let
them do this. Do not disturb When
you leave your hotel room, make it a habit to hang the "do not disturb"
sign on the door. Also be sure and leave the tv on just loud enough to
be heard slightly from outside the door. This gives the appearance that
someone is occupying the room and the burglar moves to an easier
target. Common senseAll
of this information we just provided you with on hotel safety are all
simple and easy steps that you can take to make your hotel/motel stay a
safe one. Most of all it is pretty much common sense as well as
trusting your instincts. If something doesn't feel right it probably
isn't. What about a personal portable travel alarm? One
